Ameer Khan Highlights Age Bias and Lack of Strong Roles for Women in Pakistani Showbiz
Actress and writer Ameer Khan criticizes the Pakistani entertainment industry for age-based bias against women, saying male actors continue playing younger roles while women are limited to restricted characters.
پاکستانی شوبز انڈسٹری میں خواتین اداکاراؤں کے لیے مضبوط، مرکزی اور بامعنی کرداروں کی کمی پر ایک بار پھر بحث نے جنم لیا ہے۔ ناقدین کا کہنا ہے کہ جہاں مرد اداکار چالیس اور پچاس سال کی عمر میں بھی نوجوان کرداروں میں نظر آتے ہیں اور اس پر زیادہ سوال نہیں اٹھائے جاتے، وہیں خواتین اداکاراؤں کو نسبتاً کم وقت میں عمر کے محدود یا ثانوی کرداروں تک محدود کردیا جاتا ہے۔ اس کے برعکس عالمی فلمی صنعت میں مریل اسٹریپ اور این ہیتھ وے جیسی اداکارائیں مختلف عمروں میں بھی نمایاں اور مضبوط کرداروں کے ساتھ اپنی موجودگی برقرار رکھتی ہیں۔

اسی بحث کے تناظر میں امر خان نے انڈسٹری کے اس رویے پر سوال اٹھاتے ہوئے کہا کہ خواتین کے لیے مضبوط اور معیاری کردار کم لکھے جاتے ہیں جبکہ مرد اداکار بڑھتی عمر کے باوجود بھی نوجوان کرداروں میں نظر آتے ہیں اور اس پر شاذ و نادر ہی تنقید ہوتی ہے۔
انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ پاکستانی شوبز میں یہ واضح تضاد موجود ہے کہ چند سال کے کیریئر کے بعد ہی اداکاراؤں کو محدود یا عمر رسیدہ کرداروں تک سمیٹ دیا جاتا ہے، جبکہ عالمی سطح پر کئی مثالیں موجود ہیں جہاں اداکارائیں عمر کے مختلف مراحل میں بھی اہم اور مرکزی کردار ادا کرتی نظر آتی ہیں۔

Critics argue that while male actors in their forties and fifties continue to portray younger characters with little public questioning, female actors are often confined to limited or age-specific roles after only a few years in the industry. In contrast, Hollywood continues to feature actresses like Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in significant roles across different stages of their careers.

Ameer Khan, daughter of renowned actress Fariha Jabeen, has been active in acting and writing for the past several years. She has been part of various television dramas and film projects and is known for her candid and outspoken opinions.
The discussion on age and casting suitability recently intensified when actress Atiqa Odho told actor Fahad Mustafa that he should work with heroines appropriate to his age. Fahad Mustafa’s response escalated the matter further, and later Humayun Saeed also became part of the conversation.
Commenting on this debate, Ameer Khan questioned the industry’s approach, stating that strong and quality roles for women are rarely written, whereas male actors continue to play younger roles despite aging, without facing significant criticism.
She further noted that there is a clear contradiction in Pakistani showbiz where actresses are quickly limited to age-restricted or secondary roles after a short career span, while internationally there are numerous examples of actresses continuing to perform prominent roles at different stages of life.
