Spanish police have executed a landmark operation near the Canary Islands, seizing 30 tons of cocaine from a maritime vessel. This haul is being hailed as the largest single drug seizure in the history of Europe.
The estimated international market value of the confiscated narcotics is approximately $956 million, nearly reaching the $1 billion mark.
According to the Spanish High Court, the Comoros-flagged vessel 'Arconian' was intercepted on May 1st, resulting in the detention of 23 crew members, including citizens of the Philippines, the Netherlands, and Suriname. Along with the drugs, authorities discovered a cache of firearms and ammunition during the search.
The operation was conducted with the strategic cooperation of US and Dutch authorities. Investigators suspect the smuggling ring intended to use smaller boats to distribute the narcotics into mainland Spain.
This seizure significantly surpasses previous enforcement records, including a 25-ton bust in Germany in June 2024 and Spain's prior national record of 13 tons.
